When it comes to implementing edge cloud solutions, it's crucial to get an expert opinion.

And International Data Corp (IDC) is one of the foremost experts in the space.

That’s why Rakuten Cloud recently partnered with IDC to release an “Edge AI for Industry Innovation” InfoBrief. Authored by by Dave McCarthy, IDC Research Vice President and Jennifer Cooke, IDC Senior Research Director, IDC, the new paper is a 17-page, fact-filled guide to the current edge cloud opportunity.

Defining edge cloud

The InfoBrief defines edge cloud as a distributed computing approach where resources are strategically positioned near the point of data generation and consumption. This model effectively addresses critical needs for modern digital applications, offering benefits such as improved operational efficiency, lower costs, minimized latency, enhanced performance, and robust data security and sovereignty.

What industries want edge cloud?

IDC market research details edge adoption across various industries, emphasizing market size and key use cases. By downloading the report, you'll gain access to market size projections from 2023 to 2028 for sectors like retail, manufacturing, healthcare, financial services and telecom. Currently, manufacturing leads the edge cloud market with a valuation of $2.2 billion. By 2028 that market size is predicted to be $6.2 billion which is also the largest of the markets presented in the InfoBrief.

One edge cloud accelerator identified by the IDC analysts is the fast-growing demand for AI apps. According to IDC research, 83% of organizations say they plan to run AI / ML in edge locations because they see AI at the edge as a tool for improving business operations.

Challenges to watch for

Despite its diverse use cases and significant potential, the InfoBrief lists several challenges the industry must address to get the most out of edge cloud. Of the top 11 challenges reported in their market survey, interruptions to connectivity was number one with 29% of people surveyed saying they have experienced this challenge. The complete list of challenges can be found the InfoBrief.

The authors touch on the key qualities to look for in edge cloud solutions and then introduce the concept of edge native platforms, which are designed to address the demands of distributed workloads and environments. A theme running through the paper is the crucial importance of ease of deployment and management.

The study closes with five pieces of essential guidance that offers warnings and perspective around embracing edge cloud. This alone is worth the read, but the entire document provides a great sense of perspective that you can bring to your next edge cloud review meeting. Download the document here.
