As I look at the shifting landscape of enterprise infrastructure, one trend has become undeniable: the "Edge Transformation." Companies are no longer just looking to the cloud; they are actively bringing the power of the cloud to the edge. In my view, data is your most important resource at the edge.
At Google Cloud Next this year, I had the opportunity to highlight a critical partnership that is defining this shift: the integration of Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) Connected Server and Rakuten Cloud-Native Storage (CNS).
Why move to the edge?
The move toward on-premises edge computing isn't just about cost savings—though that is a factor. It’s about three strategic pillars:
- Real-Time Decision Making: In industries such as manufacturing and hazardous operations, latency matters. When a decision is "mission-critical," where a delay could result in safety risks, processing must happen locally.
- Security and Compliance Data: Governance and strict regulatory audits are non-negotiable for sectors like finance, healthcare and the public sector. Keeping data local ensures sovereignty while maintaining auditability.

- Operational Streamlining and Resource Optimization: Managing thousands of distributed data centers is complex, but hyperconverged solutions reduce the burden on IT staff. This allows organizations to pack more applications into a smaller physical footprint with less overhead.
- Customized Customer Experiences: Edge computing empowers businesses to deliver hyper-personalized services such as real-time inventory tracking, location-specific couponing or personalized app recommendations that are tailored to a specific store or branch’s data.
The power of hyperconverged infrastructure
Scaling to tens, hundreds, or thousands of locations requires a paradigm shift. Traditional Storage Area Networks (SANs) are often too rigid and complex for edge environments.
This is where the GDC Connected Server shines. It provides a complete hardware and software stack that is:

The secret sauce in this solution is Rakuten Cloud's software-defined storage layer. Unlike legacy systems that have been "painted over" to look cloud-native, Rakuten CNS was built from the ground up for Kubernetes.
Key advantages include:
- Per-Application Lifecycle Replication: You can define different replication policies (e.g., 3-way vs. 5-way) based on the specific needs of an application, ensuring resources aren't wasted.
- IOPS Throttling: Ensures that a high-demand application doesn't starve other applications of performance, maintaining a consistent Quality of Service (QoS).
- Built from the ground up for Performance and Scale: Many vendors claim to be purpose-built for Kubernetes, but they are just the same 10-year-old storage or legacy open-source software shoehorned into Kubernetes. Unlike those models, we built it line by line for storage that hits bottlenecks as you add nodes; Rakuten CNS performance scales linearly as the infrastructure grows.
The bottom line
For the modern enterprise, the edge is a resource-starved environment where every bit of efficiency counts.
